GIZ – Waste Flow Diagram (WFD) Portal

Role: Solid Waste Management Expert (with Wasteaware)
Countries: Global scope

Project links: WFD Website and WFD Portal

The Objective

To turn the Waste Flow Diagram (WFD) website and portal into a global database for tracking plastic leakage and municipal waste flows.

The Approach

As part of the WFD team, my role has focused on both technical validation and communications:

  • Co-created the Measures Catalogue, giving cities a framework of proven interventions to reduce leakage across formal and informal systems.

  • Validated and analysed 100+ city case studies to ensure accurate, comparable, and reliable data for the WFD Portal.

  • Authored forum posts to engage the waste management community and encouraging knowledge exchange.

  • Supported portal development and interoperability, ensuring the platform remained accessible and trustworthy for users worldwide.

The Impact

  • Expanded the WFD Portal into a living global database of waste management systems.

  • Established WFD as a recognised tool for plastic leakage monitoring.

  • Provided donors, municipalities, and NGOs with evidence-based insights for improving collection, recycling, and disposal, using the measures catalogue.

  • Built an active community of practice, making the WFD not just a technical tool but a hub for collaboration and shared learning.
