The Objective

WWF’s Plastic Smart Cities (PSC) programme piloted initiatives across Asia, including refill/reuse systems, waste banks, and material recycling facilities, action plans, etc.. The challenge was to capture what worked, what didn’t, and how solutions could be scaled and replicated for municipalities, investors, and policymakers.

The Approach

  • Led the Lessons Learned Study across 5 countries

  • Analysed interventions that fell into the following groupings:

    • Reduction

    • Collection

    • Recycling & Recovery

    • Enabling Framework

  • Evaluated outcomes against:

    • Plastic reduction impact

    • Financial sustainability

    • Behaviour change & participation

    • Scalability & replication

    • User Inclusivity

The Impact

  • Produced guidance document for municipalities and investors to identify which initiatives to invest in.
