Why Defining Your ‘Why’ Is the Key to Surviving Business

How having a clear ‘why’ helps you stay motivated, overcome self-doubt, and stay consistent when building your business.

Starting a Business is Hard

Starting a business is hard. Really hard.
There will be times when you’re overwhelmed, buried in the never-ending to-do list, frustrated at how things aren’t moving fast enough, full of self-doubt, and ready to throw it all away.

When this happens, you need to remember your why.

What is Your Why?

Your why is what sparked this whole thing in the first place.
It’s the reason you took on this challenge. The reason you decided to step off the predictable path and take control. It’s your business motivation.

Maybe you were tired of working endlessly for someone else. Sick of a manager deciding what your time is worth, controlling your schedule, your salary, your life. Maybe you’ve spent years trying to climb some career ladder that never really felt like yours — always chasing, never arriving.

Perhaps you want to set your own work times, live and travel anywhere at anytime without having anyone dictate how many hours you’re allowed to actually live. Maybe you want to buy and live on a farm, hire a cleaner for the house, a chef for the kitchen, be able to spend more time with the ones you love? Ultimately, you want freedom, peace, choices.

Whatever ticks your boxes and drives you towards your goals is your why.

Knowing Your Why is Important

Because on the days you want to quit — and you will — your why will pull you back.
It’s your anchor when things feel like they’re spinning out of control and you need to steer your ship back on course.
It’s your reason to keep showing up.
It’s your reminder that what you’re building is worth the struggle.

Consistency. Commitment. Implementation.
That and a business mindset are what gets you there.
If it were easy, everyone would do it.

Visualise it. Build it.

Envision the life you want — design it in detail. Obsess over it.
Think about it so much that it starts to feel real long before it arrives.
Focus, act, build. And watch it start to unfold.

“When a person really desires something, all the universe conspires to help that person to realise his dream.”

- Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

This goes beyond logic and science. It’s much bigger than that - call it energy, nature, universal law, God.
Trust that voice.

Take Action Today

  • Take five minutes to write down your why.

  • Put it somewhere you’ll see it everyday (I love post-it notes on my wall).

  • Read it when you want to give up.

Protect it. You’ll thank yourself on the hard days.
